As a Web designer, you might have heard a lot of professionals say that using various fonts on your page is a big no-no. However, you should consider looking the other way when it comes to this advice. Although there are certainly right and wrong ways of using various fonts on your pages, failing to do so can make your page look a bit boring. By switching up the font types, sizes and even the colors, you can add depth and creativity to your website that might be difficult to match.

There are a few tips that you should keep in mind before using a bunch of different fonts on your website. First of all, you shouldn’t use too many fonts, regardless of how interesting, stylish or funky they might seem. It is best to use a maximum of two or three different fonts on a website, and they should be used in different ways. For instance, most of your typed content should be in one font, but you can try other fonts for headers, links on the side of the page or in other cases.

Also, make sure that the fonts that you use come standard on most computers and that they are easy to read. Otherwise, your viewers might not be able to read your content, or your page might look different to readers than it does to you.

Seems pretty basic – build a site that works. However, you would be surprised how things like compatibility and execution are disregarded when it comes to the production of a site. Sure, you, as a web developer, use a wireless internet service to run and test your site, but have you stopped to wonder how it will run on a service like http://internet.hughesnet.com/?

And that’s not all.

Lots of developers tend to have high-end machines that can handle lots of little scripts and animations and media, but not everyone’s computer can handle that. Some developers like to pack a site full of all kinds of little bells and whistles like animated banners, elaborate page transitions and overarching sound design.

The problem is that in the time it takes for all of those little things to download on the user’s side, they have probably already lost interest and moved on to a different site.

When it comes to developing a site, you want to fulfill your vision and make the kind of site you or your clients want, but you also need to put yourself in the shoes of your user. That means taking time to run a battery of compatibility tests and really looking out for the user.

The Facebook “Like” button is a social plug-in that has been around since 2010. When you put the Facebook “Like” button on your website and a visitor clicks on it, information is sent to the news feeds of all his friends. The information is also added to the visitor’s Wall and the Activities and Interests on his profile. The Facebook “Like” button can be placed on any page of your site for videos, pictures, or content.

It is fairly simple to have the “Like” button added to your site. First you need to copy your URL and then go to the Facebook Developer’s page: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box/. There you will put your URL in the box that says “http://www.facebook.com/platform”. You then have a few decisions about the width of the button, light or dark on the color scheme, the color of the border, if you want to show photos, if you want to display the profile page, and if you want the “Find Us on Facebook” bar included.

Next you click on the button “Get Code” and then copy the code. The final step will depend on your skill level. If you have someone who designed your website and makes changes for you, then you would send the code to him and tell him where you want it to go. If you do your own changes, then paste the code in the proper place of your website’s code.

As a web developer, using unique styles, advanced backgrounds, and several other techniques, is going to make any site you design, stand out, and something that is going to drive up traffic to that specific site. Whether you are developing a site for a business company, or for a private home based consulting firm, using the right background themes, is going to ensure that the site has that great look the business owner is trying to get, and is going to ensure that visitors to the site will love the design theme, color options, and the entire page layout chosen by you.

So, whether you are going for a more creative look, or a more technical design theme, depending on the kind of site to be developed, choosing the right complex background themes, or something more fun and creative, is really going to make for a great site. So, knowing your audience, knowing who will be visiting the site, and knowing what they want to see when they visit a site, are all important things to consider when developing a site, and making it a site that reaches the right target audience for the site, and the content on the site.

It’s a question guaranteed to create chaos whenever it is asked – but is there a best programming language for building websites?

Let us examine the four most common answers to the question.

Python -

Python is often suggested because of its “beauty” (programmers just love python), maintainability, and the ease of writing. Combined with one of several web frameworks like Django, it is a potent tool for building websites.

The .NET Languages –

The .NET Languages, most commonly C and VB.NET, are extremely powerful when combined with ASP.NET. Add Visual Studio into the mix and you have a website-building monster. Oh, and the .NET languages are backed by Microsoft, making them very attractive to companies worried about support.

PHP –

PHP powers a disproportionately large amount of the internet, and that is not surprising. The language, in combination with the other open-source members of the LAMP stack, is possibly the cheapest solution to building a website. PHP was also created expressly for web design, and while it has its limitations for other types of programming, it is simple and powerful to build websites with.

Ruby -

Ruby has enjoyed a big boost since the release of Rails, a Ruby framework to speed up the production of websites. Combined together, Ruby with Rails is a quick and fully functional solution to building top quality websites, and is just as qualified for a spot on this list as any of the other languages.

The Best? -

So which of these languages is best? Every one of them will build websites just as well as the others, so the only correct answer is – whichever language you feel most comfortable with is the best language you could build a website in. If you aren’t comfortable in any of them, and you are trying to discover which language you should learn, try simple tutorials in each of the languages and stick with the language that feels most natural to you.

Web design is more than just the challenge of placing content on the internet. The best websites represent well structured designs that quickly guide viewers to the information they are seeking. To accomplish this, a website should be streamlined for the optimal viewer experience. This is where SEO, keywords and internal search tools can be most valuable. If a viewer cannot find the information they have come to your site for in a fast and efficient manner then they will quickly leave. Focus your energy on streamlining information into logical page orientation and association.

Maintenance is also an essential website process. Once a site is built, the project’s necessities do not diminish; they simply change. Top priority is to monitor comments on your site to prevent spamming problems. Additionally, you must stay active in the updating of content on your site as this is what will draw the attention of search engine web crawlers. Being included on a search engine’s index will increase traffic to your site, but this will only happen if the crawler notices continual updates and active internal and external linking. Websites that are constantly maintained present a professional impression and gain greater attention from internet viewers.
